Hello!

I've purchased a PC from Dell HK and having it delivered to a HK address, then going to collect it on tuesday.

I'm assuming that putting the PC in a suitcase and getting on the ferry to zhuhai won't be an issue?

Anyone had experience in something similar?

Laptops are not an issue, because people take them through immigration all the time. But a PC? I think if you can clearly articulate that it is your personal machine for private use only and not for resale you should be ok. You will certainly need to run your bag through the x-ray and they will most likely know it is there.

Packing it without its box and making it look used also helps.

It is (I am told) cheaper to buy a computer in HK than on the mainland. Is it much cheaper? Are there other advantages to buying "offshore"?

And why not buy in Macau (closer than Hong Kong)?

I bought my Dell in HK in Oct., unpacked it from it's box, put it into my backpack and scanned it through as normal. No problems at all.

Thanks for the replies. I was planning on unpacking it and putting it in the suitcase so it sounds like i'll be fine.

Toby they're cheaper and better from HK. For example, I've bought the Dell XPS 8500 which comes with 3rd gen Intel i7, 16gb RAM and a really top end graphics card (Raedon 7870 i think).
Dell China don't offer specs that high, I think the max was 2nd gen i5 and 4/8gb RAM. It's inconvenient but definitely worth it.
Didn't get from Maccau as I wasn't aware they had a dedicated site for Dell.

Get rid of the box (in China the general rule is no packaging no exchange) & if you need to keep the instructions spill coffee on them! Two sure signs it's old! You should also use the 'I don't speak any Chinese, not even xie xie) when you come through customs.
