Does anybody know how and where a Chinese citizen (living in Zhuhai but with hukou in a different province) can get a health insurance for covering larger hospital bills?
Have been told that this is not possible due to the hukou issue, but I find that hard to believe.

I have an insurance with Ping An .... and I do not have a Zhuhai Hukou, so I think anyone can purchase a health Insurance with Ping An.

I suggest you ask local business owner if you can attach your gf to their company and pay her social insurance. That is the cheapest way to go.

Yes it is possible. Ping An, Tai ping life and AIA. In fact if you ask the agents they can help with that company which can "vouch" for the person to get insurance. My friend's wife is Chinese and neither of them are officially employed (working from home). They got their insurance that way.

@nevermore: This was a dinner conversation subject among friends. Why do you assume it's for a "gf"??
Anyway, thanks for the other comments - I will pass them on.

Yes. If u got a job in a company, u can ask the owner to pay for ur social insurance .Around ¥540 per month, 30% of which should be paid by urself. Covering five kinds of insurance which will help u to pay unpredictable future medical expenses. Also ,u can buy medicine from the Pharmacutical Shop using the money in ur social insurance card also.

It depends what you want. there is many chinese insurance companies that will accommodate you without zhuhai hukou. just need to know if you want basic or alternative insurance. you must know what you want. you can get 300,000 for 230+ a year. but if you your hukou is in a different province you may actually be able to get it cheaper from that province to cover you mainlandwise. just tell her to check with friends where she has hukou. they can then make the insurance policy from that province ... just need her id number ... and it will work out all right. alternatively you can get private insurance like these folks are telling you. very expensive, and complete rubbish in the ole english way of putting it. just tell your friend to contact a friend in her province and seek the best insurance available there. use her id card to get it.

Peace out

Ronny (and others), there is no easy answer to that. I depends on personal details, I think mainly age and then how much you want to be covered for. Basically you can say you want this amount in case of serious disease and this amount for coverage in case of hospitalization.

A thing that was uncommon for me is that if you keep your insurance for 20 years, you are entitled to have the money paid refunded. This of course assumes you have never had the need for the insurance and you at that time do not expect to get ill.

The tricky part is to figure out how much you want to be covered, for. When we where there they did their suggestion based on my income and they provided no information about how much e.g. treatment after a heart attack would cost. I think if you go to the hospital for a week with severe pneumonia, then that is probably not particularly expensive, but other treatments could run up in hundreds of thousands (rmb)
So apart from getting an insurance, I think it is advisable to eat healthy and get some exercise and hopefully stay healthy.
