Hong Kong Local Transportation

Every day, over 11 million passenger journeys are made on a public transport system which includes two high capacity railways, trams, buses, minibuses, taxis and ferries.

Railways
Railways form an important part of the public transport system.
•The Kowloon-Canton Railway's (KCR) East Rail connects the Ma On Shan Rail, Tsim Sha Tsui East in Kowloon, the new towns in New Territories East and the Mainland boundary at Lo Wu. Single adult (standard class) fares range from $3.5 to $12.5 (excluding service to Racecourse) for local journeys and $20 to $36.5 for journeys to Lo Wu according to the distance travelled.
•The nine- station West Rail, connecting West Kowloon and the northwest New Territories. The system, on which it takes 30 minutes to complete the whole journey, is designed to interchange with the existing MTR and Light Rail systems. Discounted single adult fares range from $4.5 to $15.
•The Mass Transit Railway(MTR) System is an underground railway network, consisting of five lines and the dedicated Airport Express. Single adult fares range from $4 to $26, and $60 to $100 for Airport Express Line
•The Light Rail System serves the new towns in the northwest New Territories. The adult single fares range from $4.0 to $5.8. The system is supported by feeder bus services.

Tram & Peak Tram
Electric trams have been running on Hong Kong Island since 1904.
The company's 163 trams, including two open-balcony trams for tourists and private hire and one special maintenance tram, make up the world's only fully double-deck tram fleet. Fares were $2 for adults and $1 for children under 12 and senior citizens aged 65 or above.
A cable-hauled funicular tramway runs between Central and the Peak, mainly tourists and local sightseers. A single trip for adults costs $22.

Buses
Franchised buses are the largest road-based carriers and account for about 37 per cent of the total daily public transport volume.
City Bus: Fares range from $2.5 to $10.6 for Hong Kong Island routes and $3.5 to $48 for Shuttle, External and Airport routes.
The New World First Bus Services Limited (NWFB): Fares for Hong Kong Island routes range from $3.0 to $11.6 and Kowloon and Tseung Kwan O routes range from $3.2 to $7.5.
Long Win Bus Company Limited: Fares range from $3.5 to $28.

Ferries
A vast fleet of ferries plies between the many islands of Hong Kong. The granddaddy of them all and an attraction in itself is the Star Ferry, whose most popular line travels between Kowloon and Central nearly continuously, and offers amazing views (especially when coming from Kowloon). Upper deck seats cost $2.20 while lower deck $1.70.
Ferries to Lamma, Lantau and other islands depart from a variety of ports, but the largest and most important terminal is at Central adjacent to the Star Ferry. Ferries are usually divided into fast ferries and slow ferries, with fast ferries charging around twice the price for half the journey time, although not all destinations offer both kinds of service. Example fares for trips from Central to Yung Shue Wan (Lamma) are $10/15 slow/fast, and to Mui Wo (Lantau) $10.50/$21. Note that all fares increase around 50% on Sundays and public holidays.
