As the 105th Canton Fair comes to a crescendo: we’re setting our sites on some sumptuous dining. We need to catch up on our carbs after wearing our shoe-leather down on the trade fair floors. Which means pasta. In Guangzhou, straight from the Pazhou Trade Fair grounds, we are heading to Prego.
Perched atop the Westin Guangzhou, Prego features an original array of Southern Italian delights. Our appetizer was a big and hot bread roll served with fresh tomato sauce for dipping. We tried the porcini pie as a starter. It consists of finely chopped porcini mushrooms and is served spongy in the shape of a biscuit. Adding to the heady mushroom taste is a dollop of gorgonzola cheese sauce. Strong flavors for sure: balance the mushroom and cheese out with New Zealand’s Cloudy Bay Sauvignon blanc.
If entertaining Chinese clients who are averse to heavier dishes (like the lasagna), consider the braised ossobusco with saffron risotto. The ossobusco carries hints of red wine and the risotto is aromatic with rosemary herb. Perfect for a light lunch.
We just mentioned lasagna. One word: outstanding. It too carries fresh herbs for aroma. Freshly baked, the cheese is as generous as the pasta and tomato sauce. Excellent for dinner with any wine that is Italian and red. They have no trouble accommodating this at Prego.
Dessert lovers take heart: their Tiramisu comes in a nice bowl and is dusted with a divine coating of cinnamon. In other words, generous portions. If the spirit suits, wend your way down for after-dinner aperitifs or cocktails at QBA on the ground floor.
