McDonald's to expand drive-through outlets, franchises in China

Briefing

McDonald's Corp. (MCD.N), the world's largest hamburger chain, said on Friday that it plans to aggressviely expand drive-through outlets and increase franchise numbers in China in years to come.

McDonald's currently has three franchises in mainland China and just opened its 100th drive-through in the southern city of Zhongshan.

"We are not in a rush to expand this (franchise) programme," Kenneth Chan, McDonald's China CEO, told Reuters in an interview after officiating launch of a new marketing campaign, adding: "Franchising is part of our expansion plan."

McDonald's, which aimed to open 150-175 new stores in China this year, also planned to roll out McCafes in key Chinese cities, he added.

McDonald is launching a new brand concept called "Make Room for Happiness" to mark the 20th anniversary of the opening of its first restaurant in Shenzhen.
